More Fun Wizards Advanced Stats For Your Consideration

Posted on January 02, 2014 by Ted Leonsis

Fans seemed to love the blog post on advanced stats so I will just post a few more random ones here for you to  dwell on. As I noted a few days ago, it seems the key for success in the new NBA is to be a very good 3 point shooting team, get to the foul line often and make your shots, and hit lots of easy shots via fast breaks and points in the paint.

Points in the paint - when we win, we only let up about 35 points in the paint; and when we lose, it is more like 45 points. So limiting points in the paint is a key consideration.

3 point shooting is key for us.We have three players in the top 30 in 3 point shooting percentage: Beal, Ariza and Webster.

Fast break points: in the last 19 games, we are ranked 4th in the NBA in fast break points.

Free throws: when we were 2-7, we were 28th in the NBA in free throw percentage and now we are 17th. We need to improve here as we are 22nd in free throw attempts and 28th in free throws made. When we win, we shoot 78 percent. When we lose, we shoot 69 or so percent. We need to improve here.

Assists: we are ranked 7th in the NBA is assists; this is the highest ranking for the team in 17 years.

Martin Gortat is the number 1 ranked NBA player in points per game coming off of pick and rolls. When he goes to the basket for points in the paint, we are very productive and successful as a team.

The Wizards are number 1 in the NBA is fast break points when Gortat and Nene are on the court. The Wizards are number 4 in effective field goals made percentage with Gortat on the floor and 30th with him  NOT on the floor.

Trevor Booker is playing well and is a beast on the offensive boards. When he is on the court, we are ranked number 1 in the NBA in offensive rebounding percentage and number 25 when he is NOT on the court.

Nene -  we are number 1 in NBA in defensive rebounding percentage with him on the floor and 25th without him on the floor.

John Wall - we are 15th in the NBA in free throws attempted with John on the floor, and 30th with him NOT on the floor.

John Wall is number 1 in touches per game and number 1 in time of possession with the ball in the NBA.

John Wall has made more 3 point shots so far this season than the last two seasons combined.

If there is one thing we could do most to improve as a team, it would be to NOT take 22 foot shots early in the shot clock.

Our 9 man rotation of Wall, Beal, Ariza, Webster, Nene, Gortat, Booker, Vesely, and Seraphin is very productive and stacks up very well against the NBA leaders.
