Positive Direction

Posted on January 25, 2013 by Ted Leonsis

We will take on the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight after returning from a very positive five-game trip. With our roster as healthy as it has been all season, we are consistently competing at a high level and starting to see what we envisioned when we put this team together during the off-season.

John Wall has played in seven games since returning from injury, and we are excited with the way our team has responded to his presence. In those seven contests, we are 4-3, with those three loses coming on the road by a combined 12 points.

Check out our numbers in the nine games we have played without John and Nene compared with the last seven games when both were relatively healthy:

9 games without John and Nene

record: 0-9

field-goal percentage: 39.6%

hree-point shooting: 30.4%

rebounding: 41.0 per game

assists: 21.4 per game

scoring margin: -7.7 points per game

7 games with John and Nene

record: 4-3

field-goal percentage: 46%

three-point shooting: 42.9%

rebounding: 45.3 per game

assists: 24.4 per game

scoring margin: +4.9 points per game

And it is much more than just these two playing well. With John returning to the lineup and Nene increasing his minutes, other players can return to filling the roles that suit them best. Take Emeka Okafor for example. He has thrived in his last 16 games, seven of those with Wall back, averaging 10.1 points and 11.2 rebounds while recording eight double-doubles.

And how about young rookie Bradley Beal? He has steadily improved each month and is having an outstanding January, averaging 16.7 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting .460 from the field and an impressive .547 from behind the arc. We are hoping to see Bradley represent our organization in the Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star Weekend in Houston.

I am looking forward to the second half of the season. As Bradley said recently, “I like our chances against anybody. I love this team and the route that we’re going.”
